Supporting Inclusive Education: Uniforms and Stationaries Distributed at Sanya Juu Primary School.

Tambua Utu Foundation has provided school uniforms and stationery to 15 students at Sanya Juu Primary School in Siha District. The support was directed to the Kitengo class, a specialized unit serving learners with Autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities.

This intervention addresses a critical gap in inclusive education in Tanzania. National data, including findings from the 2022 Population and Housing Census, indicate that an estimated 8–10% of children live with some form of disability. However, enrollment and retention rates for children with developmental disabilities remain significantly lower than the national average due to stigma, poverty, and limited access to specialized learning resources. School related costs including uniforms and learning materials, remain a key barrier to consistent attendance for vulnerable households.

Providing uniforms promotes dignity and belonging within the school environment, reducing visible socioeconomic disparities. Access to basic stationery ensures that students can actively participate in structured classroom activities and individualized learning programs. Evidence from education interventions across Sub-Saharan Africa shows that provision of essential school supplies can increase attendance among vulnerable learners by 10–20%.

The Kitengo class plays an essential role in supporting children who require tailored instruction and structured learning environments. By equipping these 15 students with uniforms and learning materials, Tambua Utu Foundation contributes to improved attendance stability, increased classroom engagement, and strengthened inclusion within mainstream education settings.
